Original

I have been working on a simplified painting practice. Limited palette, limited brush selection, and limited subject matter. It has been a great experience. I couldn’t be happier with the results. I completed 10-12 paintings focusing on still life in crimson or red. The last week or so I focused on still life in orange.Continue reading “Original”

Cleaning and retouching

My paintings get dust and ‘fuzzies’ on them as they slowly dry. I do not like to see vivid white cat hair clinging to ivory black. I am not 100% sure about how to temporarily varnish them and then remove that varnish later (after the paint has dried for at least a year!) only toContinue reading “Cleaning and retouching”

Golden

Feeling like it was time, as my new studio space is all set up, I moved on from crimson and red paintings to orange. The first rendezvous with orange was a steaming hot disaster. I am too embarrassed to show you…trust me it was BAD. So, I decided to step back and paint something IContinue reading “Golden”

Tiny Desk Studio

Today I completed the final step from my mentoring session. I set up a permanent place to paint. Painting in my kitchen was not ideal for many reasons but after making the changes to my palette (simplifying mostly) and changes to my brush load (another simplification) it was time to make the final change. AContinue reading “Tiny Desk Studio”

History

I went to the Towne Centre Theater to pick up my paintings on display there.  It is sad that the group will have to move and the lovely old church will close and most likely be torn down.  The real estate market in Nashville is on fire.  Most likely, the old historic church will becomeContinue reading “History”

Imperfect

Lately, I have been thinking a lot about perfection.  Sometimes I find myself paralyzed due to imperfection.  I may rerun a loop in my head of an imperfect encounter. Or I might toss out a painting because I can see  something in the piece that makes me nuts…a glaring imperfection. This desire for perfection hasContinue reading “Imperfect”

It’s OK

Sometimes try as we might, a painting isn’t what we hoped.  I had a feeling that this painting wouldn’t be my favorite.  I didn’t feel well yesterday and today even after going for a lovely walk in the forrest I couldn’t shake the blues. I tried a couple of compositions but I didn’t love them.Continue reading “It’s OK”

Pomegranate

Ancient Egyptians regarded the pomegranate as a symbol of prosperity and ambition.  In Greek mythology the pomegranate symbolized the ‘fruit of the dead’ growing from the blood of Adonis.  It is traditional to consume pomegranates on Rosh Hashana as its numerous seeds represent prosperity.  I like pomegranates for the vivid crimson arils.  They glisten withContinue reading “Pomegranate”
