Lately, I have been thinking a lot about perfection. Sometimes I find myself paralyzed due to imperfection. I may rerun a loop in my head of an imperfect encounter. Or I might toss out a painting because I can see something in the piece that makes me nuts…a glaring imperfection. This desire for perfection hasContinue reading “Imperfect”

Pomegranate
Ancient Egyptians regarded the pomegranate as a symbol of prosperity and ambition. In Greek mythology the pomegranate symbolized the ‘fruit of the dead’ growing from the blood of Adonis. It is traditional to consume pomegranates on Rosh Hashana as its numerous seeds represent prosperity. I like pomegranates for the vivid crimson arils. They glisten withContinue reading “Pomegranate”
Nutcracker
This time of year can be stressful and fun. We decorated the house for the holidays. One of our favorite decorations is our collection of nutcrackers. We love the ballet and there was even a new Disney movie released this season called, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. We talked throughout the film comparing theContinue reading “Nutcracker”
Thanks
Most folks in the US will tell you that Thanksgiving is their favorite holiday. It is mine too. In Tennessee the weather is usually mild, the leaves are blowing around, and the food is delicious. Family time is to be cherished and/or dreaded. Then, there is the next best holiday, Black Friday. This is officiallyContinue reading “Thanks”
Before and after
A few weeks ago I had a mentoring session with one of my favorite artists, Abbey Ryan. The first painting I completed after our session was this one of a single red pear. I am not sure I love it. So today I went in and revised it. Not sure how I feel about itContinue reading “Before and after”
Starting Over
Sometimes you have to throw in the towel. Starting over isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I finally repainted this dice composition. I struggled with getting the translucency rendered for hours and hours one Saturday. Then, I worked for hours and hours the next day. At the end of about 16 hours I felt completely defeated.Continue reading “Starting Over”
Transparent
So…I have been working on this painting for longer than most. I still don’t like it, but I WANT to like it. I can’t decide if I should start over because I love the idea of this painting. I like the composition, the colors, and the concept. What I don’t love: the rendering if theContinue reading “Transparent”
Everyday things
Today I worked on a painting of a pincushion and thread. I decided to paint the it a week ago, maybe longer. I wanted to changed the wood bock that I use to set up my compositions. I do this so that the subject isn’t floating in space. Anyway, I spent time a long searchingContinue reading “Everyday things”
Lighting
I struggled with taking a photo of this oil painting of the lop-sided apple. Every time I set up the camera and the lights I kept getting a weird reflection in the top left corner. I finally got it right yesterday. I worked some more on the transparency of the dice in the dice painting.Continue reading “Lighting”
