Busy reading and painting

I’ve been extremely productive since returning from the Vermont residency. I devoured texts regarding contemporary painting and visited galleries and museums around town. If you are interested in my bibliography I may get around to posting it but if you comment I will definitely post it. I’ve also been painting a lot and on aContinue reading “Busy reading and painting”

On the easel

I didn’t paint much this week. I had a terrible cold. I slept a lot. Before I was debilitated by mucous I managed to paint this rough underpainting. It has elements that I enjoy painting: lettering, translucence, and details. Just for fun I thought I would practice my portrait skills. It’s been about a yearContinue reading “On the easel”

Oiling out and varnishing

I am still struggling to paint orange. In my procrastination, I found myself cleaning paintings. Then I decided to oil-out some paintings that looked wonky. It felt great to clean up the work. I don’t have a show for a couple weeks. Hopefully, these will be dry by then. I also varnished some pieces. IContinue reading “Oiling out and varnishing”

Painting distance

As I start the third painting in my quest to paint orange I can report that my painting practice is starting to feel different. I don’t love orange. I have written about this mild contempt before. I completed 10-12 paintings focusing on still life in crimson or red. The last week or so I focused on still life in orange.Continue reading “Original”

Golden

Feeling like it was time, as my new studio space is all set up, I moved on from crimson and red paintings to orange. The first rendezvous with orange was a steaming hot disaster. I am too embarrassed to show you…trust me it was BAD. So, I decided to step back and paint something IContinue reading “Golden”

It’s OK

Sometimes try as we might, a painting isn’t what we hoped.  I had a feeling that this painting wouldn’t be my favorite.  I didn’t feel well yesterday and today even after going for a lovely walk in the forrest I couldn’t shake the blues. I tried a couple of compositions but I didn’t love them.Continue reading “It’s OK”

Nutcracker

This time of year can be stressful and fun.  We decorated the house for the holidays.  One of our favorite decorations is our collection of nutcrackers.  We love the ballet and there was even a new Disney movie released this season called, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.  We talked throughout the film comparing theContinue reading “Nutcracker”
